Bonito Thompson (Don Dada Ja)
My name is Bonito Thompson. I’m a Jamaican digital artist that goes by the name Don Dada. My artist name is heavily influenced by my culture. In Dancehall culture being a ‘Don’ in your chosen field says you’re the best at what you do. I draw a lot of inspiration from Dancehall (Jamaican Pop culture). And this is evident in some key elements like – the sound systems, zink fences, dance moves and other iconic Dancehall imagery. This is all represented in my pieces.
My culture is vibrant and dynamic, the way we dress, act, and carry ourselves as Jamaicans is bold and unique. My aim is to represent this unique energy the way I see and experience it through art.
● In 2018 I had my first large solo art show in partnership with Chilitos called Passionfruit. The collection was an abstract and exciting 6 piece display that explored human connections with a tropical vibe.
● In 2019 Don Dada was born and in 2020 I was featured as Kingston Creative’s artist of the month for Reggae Dancehall month in February
● May 2021 saw me, Don Dada collaborating with Damian Marley, Common and PJ for the remix of their summer song What do you say.
● I’m also a graphic designer and have created the lead visuals for Reggae Sumfest (2019-2020), Jamaica Food and Drink Festival (2020) and Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival (2020) to name a few.
My upcoming art show, Paper Planes, is an immersive augmented reality event where 15 pieces will be on display all centred around Dancehall culture. Paper Planes is an innovative art show that fuses cutting edge technology with art and culture
